At some point, I decided supporting the cable with part of the mast of our laser would be a good idea. It turns out the cable (even with an impossible amount of tension and with this in place) wouldn’t reach the hook on the boathouse. My current theory is that the boathouse has sunk/shifted away from the main house by 1.5-2 inches since the cable was put in. (I later bought a screw link while in town to bridge the gap.)
