Another small project: I installed screw eyes on the porch for locking the kayaks.

…I’m sure you’ve noticed my handsome spectacles, as well. Not that it’s relevant (actually it’s really not, but I think it’s cool how many of the things around us have stories), but they were my dad’s safety glasses during an internship at a shipyard while he was in college. He went to the Webb Institute, which never fails to raise eyebrows when I describe it to friends: they have 80 students who live in a mansion on Long Island Sound, they offer free tuition to everyone who attends, and every graduate walks away with exactly two degrees (two of the most respected in the country in this field, by the way) in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (my dad promptly got a job at GE designing combined cycle systems for power plants, and he wrote his senior thesis on an asteroid propulsion technique, both of which tell you something about the wonderful flexibility that quality educations in engineering can afford).

(PS – I love how geeky I can look in these. All I have to do is crack an awkward neutral smile, and the nerdy frames and glare take care of the rest!)
